Ride Summary (totals):
Distance: 60.15 mi
Elevation Gain 2,923 ft
Moving Time: 03:30:24
Avg Moving Speed: 17.1 mph
Max Speed: 36.4 mph

Group: Jamie, Diane, Nancy, Alan, Tim, Joe, Edgar and me
Goal: Enjoy riding with friends
Route Description: A mix of large to small rolling hills and flatter sections with one short climb

The Ride: I remember a few years ago NARC would have larger groups roll out for the holiday rides, but this year not so much and even then many of our normal group were spread out doing other rides, but I am very glad with the 7 friends that showed up to ride with me at the brewery. It was a nice number and as Jamie stated at the end of the ride we all finished together.

We know that the more show up the more the ride becomes a race, but with just eight of us we had our moments of riding at conversation pace, stop or slow pedal for some mechanical issues and at times we had a nice brisk pace. My data showing time at level below indicates we had a variety of intensities throughout the ride, but to me still very pleasurable. We had just the right amount of miles with challenging terrain for the day as well and toward the end the temperature was approaching the 90 degree mark so it was a timely ending without anyone overheating.

Diane, Jamie and other doing BRAG, I hope you all have a great time cycling. We will miss you the next couple of weeks and we are dreading how strong you will be when you return. :-)

To the gang today.....you are a blessing to me to be able to share time and miles with you.

Rose Pedal Metric - Hanging On

Ride Summary (totals):
Distance: 61.33 mi
Elevation Gain 3,237 ft
Moving Time: 03:25:58
Avg Moving Speed: 17.9 mph
Max Speed: 41.7 mph

Group:Jamie, Mike, Gary, Jack, Scott, Kit, Neal, Keith and me
Goal: Hang on for dear life

The Ride: I am glad that several were interested in doing something a little different today and now that we have had a taste of the roads along the Rose Pedal route most of us are enjoying something a little different than our usual brewery routes. I am surprised I like the roads up there since I usually do not favor the larger rolling terrain as I typically struggle, but I still enjoyed the roads today.

Typically I do more in organizing with the routes and getting the word out, but lately work has been a bit more stressful and I have not had time. Gary had more to do with getting the word out for this weekend and when folk started showing up for the ride and I looked around I had a moment of doubt that I could hang with this group. It is kind of like a club rider getting to invited to ride with a bunch of Cat 3 racers. Well, that may be a slight exaggeration, but still I did not think I could hang for the full ride. Fortunately the group had mercy on some of the larger rollers as they slowed down on the other side and I was able to get back on, take a breather and hope to hang on for the next one. I looked at my power meter as we hit some of those hills and the reading would be well over 400 watts. This was quite different style of riding compared to my training since last June where I have just concentrated on a steady Level 3 & 4 type of training to work on my aerobic conditioning.

Neal summed how I felt today as he said something like, "I am proud of us for hanging on." That was exactly how I felt in those last few miles coming in because I truly thought I would have been dropped in the first 20 miles. Not to mention Kit driving the pace at the front and not stopping until about mile 48. I had to do a nature break way before that. Me enduring 48 miles without doing a nature break may have set a personal record.

To the gang today.....you are a blessing to me to be able to share time and miles with you.

Brewery 85 - Rev It Till It Overheats

RidewithGPS Data
Garmin Connect Ride Data
Ride Summary (totals):
Distance: 86.22 mi
Elevation Gain 3,703 ft
Moving Time: 05:07:12
Avg Moving Speed: 16.8 mph (Overheated and had to slow down)
Max Speed: 33.5 mph

Group:Jamie, Diane, Mike, Gary, Rod and me
Goal: Enjoy the day with my cycling buddies

The Ride: We tried an "Exploratory Ride" as Tim might call it. I wanted a route that was fairly flat, but had enough miles. I think today's route accomplished that task and I really like the route. It had a nice mix of scenery, but we also saw pockets of areas destroyed by the recent tornadoes that hit this area. The damage was amazing and my thoughts and prayers go out to all those who trying piece their life and home back together.

I certainly enjoyed the group and with the smaller number it just makes the whole day a lot less stressful. As you can imagine the more people the more opportunity for mayhem of different sorts, but today we had the core of the group and those who I have been privileged to ride a lot of miles with the past couple of years.
We tend to look out for each other and today thanks to Diane for looking out for me as I started to get overheated around mile 70. At mile 78 I had stop for a little and cool off as I was feeling like tossing the cookies and I had not the joy of eating any cookies yet. At least good sense had me slow my pace down until the end otherwise the pace was fairly brisk for many miles and I can imagine that the others may have ended with a good average speed. But again thanks to Diane for slowing down, waiting on me, chatting with me and towing me back in. I had plenty of power still left in my legs, but I am glad that my typical hardheadedness male ego was suppressed with some rational thinking, but then again I had female influence and wisdom so again Diane gets the credit. Gary looked a bit overheated as well when I pulled into the parking lot, but my head was spinning a little so I may not have been clear minded enough to tell.

Everyone in the group seemed to have plenty of sustainable power in their legs today. Rod had some exceptionally long brisk pulls in the front as did Gary and Mike seem to be pushing the pace as well.

Despite this little heat episode, I had a great day with my cycling friends. The route was good except for the one road that was "shake and bake" for a couple of miles. We stopped at a store around mile 43 and stopped again at Carters Lake Dam. The exploratory road turned out to be gravel so we had to stay on route, but the traffic was not too bad even on some of the roads labeled as highways. However, it may be a route better traveled in a group rather than solo.

Hopefully we can quickly get acclimated to this sudden jump in heat. It may change my hopes of having a summer full of long rides if I cannot get used to it soon. Oh well...to all my cycling buddies and those who were off doing other things I hope you got in the miles you wanted and the route was a joy. See you soon

To the gang today.....you are a blessing to me to be able to share time and miles with you.

2011 Up The Creek - Century

RidewithGPS Data  (Good source to see the profile data)
Ride Summary (totals):
Distance: 101.32 mi (Route was changed this year) (Previous Years: 99.2)
Elevation Gain 4,690 ft (Previous Years: 4,478)
Moving Time: 05:49:31 (2009: 05:53:10)
Avg Moving Speed: 17.3 mph (2009: 16.9 mph)
Max Speed: 37.5 mph (2009: 36.5 mph)

Group:
"A" Group - Paul and Alan (it sounded like the two of them were the front group this year)
Also attending in various groups and mileage options - Jamie, Matt, Peter, Glenn, Neal, Edgar, Cristi, Jack, Derek, Rod, Tim, Richard, Margaret and a few hundred others

Goal: Survive and not put myself into a recovery hole

The Event:
I am starting to lose track of how many UTC rides I have attended. This may have been my fifth year in a row and I always enjoy going. This year was no different for wanting to attend, but I was concerned with the new start location and was really concerned about the century route. I know the world does not revolve around me, but I always like coming to UTC as it typically follows the next weekend after 3 State 3 Mountain. I like it because the route in the past was fast and was a nice change from all the climbing the previous week. More about this later.

This year they seemed to really step up the number of police officers to control traffic and quite a few EMT's seemed to be out on the road. Unless the cars were unmarked I did not notice any support vehicles the entire day. I stopped a couple sag stops and there was enough available and well stocked. The post ride meal was salad, pasta, some deserts and drinks. Plenty of friendly volunteers from the host cycling club, Armuchee High School staff and students.

Sufficient parking at Armuchee High School provides a nice venue for pre and post ride rest rooms and showers were available as well. I did miss coming into the mall like in previous years with more people still hanging around eating and chatting about the ride. We came in today and most were already gone. Kinda missed the post ride Chick-fil-A :(

Great Job for all those who made our (cyclists) day a very pleasurable day on the bike.

The Ride:
I wondered if the new route would impact speed posted in previous years by other cyclists. It seemed as if it did, but the details, such as, elevation indicate that the route was not much more difficult. However, to me if felt more difficult and that may be due to a few reasons. I was worn out from 3 State 90 mile ride last week, caught a nasty cold between that ride and this one and just simply did not feel like I was at the top of my game for today. So it may not be the route as much as it may have just been me having a tough day. The route had Little Sand Mountain included this year and that sure enough slowed me down to a crawl at one point, but fortunately it was a short climb and a great descent with some nice "S" curves to make it more exciting.

The mass start sure did not look like the mass starts of past years with what looked like hoards of Cat level racers lined up to roll out for a fast century. I was up in front with Alan, Paul and Derek and it did not take long for a small cluster with Paul and Alan included to hit a brisk pace. I was in another small group a couple of hundred feet behind them with a slightly less intense pace, but still pretty brisk for the first few miles.

I overheard that most of the guys in my group were only doing the metric route and their pace was starting to pick up. A little too much heat on that pace since I was doing the century so I bailed out. I was riding solo when Glenn, Matt, Rod, Jamie, Peter and a few more caught me at Little Sand Mountain. Their pace was also a little more than I wanted so I dropped off. I did a lot of miles solo and many of those in a head wind. That sure took some spunk out of my legs.
I lost track of time and miles, but I found the group at a sag stop and Jamie talked me into trying to hang, but this time Neal, Edgar, Jack and Derek were there. I rolled out with Neal, who I ended up sharing the remaining miles with. It is always nice to roll along and enjoy the ride with Neal. Neither of us were looking to give our legs a good thrashing for the day, but we did catch on the back of a group that included Edgar and Jack. We held with that group's pace to the end. Jack and Edgar looked solid for their first 2011 century.

I got to enjoy the post ride meal with just about everyone on my group list above. A few mentioned that they also felt as if the course felt harder this year. Comparing profiles it looks like there are a lot more sharp rollers this year, I like to call them stingers, as compared to my 2009 data.

I did not bring my video camera today because it was in the forecast as a 40% chance of rain. I also used my heavier rain bike today, but the weather turned out to be awesome for this event. We had dark skies that kept us cooler for many miles and then sunny skies later in the ride. I never even felt a drop, but I sure enjoyed the clouds.

2011 3 State 3 Mountain - Shortened Century Option

Left to Right: Jesse, Mike, Gary and Keith
At the top of Sand Mountain

Ride Summary (totals):
Distance: 86.9 mi (Route had to be cut short because of tornado damage)
Moving Time: 05:28:22
Avg Moving Speed: 15.9 mph
Max Speed: 42.1 mph

Group:
Our Group - Keith, Gary, Mike, me and Jack joined us later
Also attending in various groups - Jamie, Kit, Matt, Peter, Glenn, Neal, Kit, Edgar, Cristi, Debbie, Derek, Elizabeth, Joe and a couple thousand more cyclists from various parts of the nation.

Goal: Enjoy the day and the ride with friends

The Event:
I have been saying this for a few years that the organizers, the city, the volunteers and everyone associated with putting on 3 State 3 Mountain do a great job and this year I am sure they were even more challenged because of the recent tornado damage to find an alternate route. My appreciation goes out to all of those who helped make our ride today a pleasurable event. The century route was a few miles too short, but I did not hear anyone griping about it.

As usual they had traffic controlled for the cyclist with some serious control. It is like the cyclists have been given the key to the city as they hold back traffic for a couple thousand or more cyclists navigating through the town to the rural sections. Though I only made use of one sag stop there were enough available and well stocked. The post ride meal were sandwiches from Subway, adult beverages, sodas for geeks like me, cookies and chips.

Sufficient parking and Findley Stadium provides a nice venue for pre and post ride rest rooms and showers were available as well.

Again Great Job for all those who made our (cyclists) day a very pleasurable day on the bike.
The people impacted by the storms in Georgia, Tennessee and Alabama have been in my prayers.

The Ride:
This is my fourth year of not only attending the event, but also my fourth that I got to share travel time and the day with Gary and Mike. I really enjoyed the friendship and the ride. I think Mike and I enjoyed the news of Burkhalter Gap being taken out of the route this year and were content with the thought of doing about 90 miles instead. Gary, well, he always loves a hill climb so perhaps he may have missed ole Burkhalter Gap Road.

But in my opinion the ride coordinators did a good job scrambling to arrange a new route that still had its share of challenges. This year the route changed the approach and climb up Sand Mountain making it at least a couple miles longer and there were some other short, sharp stingers that may not show in the profile, but certainly left an impression on my legs.

We started way in the back of the mass start so we missed part of the group and were kind of stuck at a slow precarious speed for a few miles through town and to the tunnel, but just before the tunnel there is a slight incline that starts to thin out the crowd and then on Suck Creek Mountain the crowd begins to thin out even more. Climbing S.C. Mt. is to me a real joy with its gentle grade. It makes even a poor climber like myself feel good about climbing.

Then there is the "This is not a mountain" became one this year based on the painted marks. It is a nice little stinger that will most certainly wake up the heart. The next climb was Sand Mountain and I was struggling to keep the climbing pace of Gary, Keith and Mike and could feel my legs starting to loose some of the zeal on the steeper sections, but fortunately the guys waited on me. After that we had some brisk pace line going and had a few others join on the back. Both Gary and Keith did a great job and lot of miles pulling today.

When we hit the mark for 10 miles out Mike took off with a vengeance. Later he pretty much summed up his fire that he was ready to push himself, but I was not so ready for him to get this motivation. However, it was fun to fire up a fast pace coming into the City of Chattanooga and my legs felt willing to participate. We rolled through the area sectioned off with cones for the cyclists and cruised at a good speed to the finish and to the post ride meal where we met up with some of our cycling buddies. I got to catch up with Peter, Jamie, Neal, Edgar, Jack and others for how their day and ride went. Seemed that most stated they were okay with missing Burkhalter this year. I had hoped to run video on the beast, but sitting here tonight my legs can tell you they are happy to have missed climbing the wall.

Training Week Summary
Total Time: 7:02:27
Total Miles: 101
Total TSS: 399
Total kj (kilojoules): 3096
Pinched a nerve in lower back on Monday and sharp pain in right hip kept me from training Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Saturday and Sunday training was just trying to get some motion back in the legs. With the pain it was tough to produce higher power output.
