Brewery Solo 80

Ride Metrics:

Distance (mile): 80
Speed Avg (mph): 16
Cadence (rpm): 70

TSS: 247
IF: 0.70
Moving Time: 4:54

Once again the Garmin 820 decides mid-ride to save the ride and start another one. How that happens is beyond me. Thinking about going back to the Garmin 500 and back when they made half-decent products that were reliable.

Update: I was able to combine the two ride files into one file on Strava.

Goal:

Build Endurance

Ride Description:

I think each of us should be given five "It's early in the season" cards that we can play while in spring training. Well maybe ten cards since I feel like I could have played a card last weekend and then today.  I did not do well in the wind today and had to fight it the entire way back. I will just keep working on it.

Weather:

Temperature Start (F): 35
Temperature Finish (F): 67
Wind: SSE 7 mph
Sky: Partly cloudy

Nutrition Intake During and Immediately After:

Bottle #1 24oz. Water, Amino Acid, Maltodextrin
Bottle #2 5oz. Water, Amino Acid, Maltodextrin

Ride Description:

Feels like it has been a while since my last ride at the brewery. We have been getting rain almost every weekend for weeks and even today it started to sprinkle about the time I rolled out of the parking area. Other cyclists were dressed fairly heavily for the cool temperatures and the pending rain. I went out with a summer kit with arm and leg warmers and a Suguoi ultralight wind shell. A few miles later and the wind shell came off.

I felt like I battled a lot of things today. The worst being my lack of endurance at this time of year and the inability to put up a good fight against the wind. Most of the miles were under dark skies and brief moments of rain.

Weather:

Temperature Start (F): 55
Temperature Finish (F): 65
Wind: 10 mph SSE with gusts

Ride Description:

I thought seriously about going to the brewery because I knew the good weather would bring a lot of people out to the path and it did. Heading out from the zero mile marker it was loaded with people and a struggle to maintain a decent pace. Even further out was a little tougher.

Coming back was little different and when I noticed a white jersey way up in front that became my chase target. When I thought I would get into range he would make it through a red light and I would get stopped. I finally caught with him after about a six mile chase and came around him about ten miles out. He got on my wheel and we kept pace until we reached the four mile marker and he turned off as we both said thanks for the pace. At that point another guy jumped on my wheel and we tried to keep a decent pace until the end, but again that was tough as the foot traffic picked up and there was a larger number of small children walking. Better to be safe and not harm anyone.

Indoor training felt a little better this week, but with rainy weekends I am short of base endurance from not doing the extended Saturday endurance miles and I can feel it.

Ride Description:

How I wished it would stop raining and stop threatening to rain on the weekends. I picked going to the Comet because it looked fairly certain based on the weather reports that rain was moving in from the northwest. Going to the brewery looked like a bad idea unless I made the ride super short or ride in the rain. However, I don't think it rained there and it was still looked good at the end of a short 40 mile ride.

Another zing for me was not really tuning in mentally at the start and just cruising at a comfortable pace going out. I had a very clear path and really could have opened up the engine had my mind not been drifting on one obscure thought to another.

At the 20 mile turn point I heard a loud boom. Turned out to be another serious car wreck just down the hill at an intersection. This is the second time in just a week that I have seen a bad wreck at that traffic light in just a short time. Made me glad to be up on a bike path today and away from the cars. Then again I prefer to be out on my usual course at the brewery. Also had a couple of guys jump on my wheel in the last number of miles and enjoyed pushing the pace. At the end they said they appreciated the pace and the pull. Down in aero pushing the pace is a sweet spot of happiness.
